One boater killed, one injured near Lake Borgne

A near head-on collision between two recreational fishing boats today (Feb. 15) near Lake Borgne left one person dead and another injured, a U.S. Coast Guard official told LouisianaSportsman.com.

“Eyewitnesses said the two boats were traveling at a high rate of speed and came around a blind bend at the same time,” USCG Sector New Orleans Search and Rescue Coordinator Paul Barnard said. “The eyewitness said they did not have the opportunity to react to avoid the collision.”[…]

A hurricane threatening the Louisiana Gulf coast wasn’t enough to prevent Kevin VanDam from claiming the world championship of professional angling in the 31st Bassmaster Classic Aug. 2-4, 2001, in New Orleans.

VanDam won the event in his 11th try with a three-day total weight of 32-5 and edged second-place Scott Rook by 1 pound, 1 ounce.[…]

Nashville recording artist Randy Montana and Casey Ashley will perform live during the 2011 Bassmaster Classic set for New Orleans on Feb. 18-20, B.A.S.S. announced today (Feb. 8).

“We live to fish, and we love listening to country music — especially good country music by the likes of Casey, who is on Costa’s pro staff, and Randy Montana,” said Al Perkinson, vice president of marketing of Costa. “The Costa stage will definitely be rocking this year at the Classic.
