West Monroe man sentenced in federal court for killing bald eagle

A West Monroe man was lost his hunting privileges, received a fine, and was sentenced to unsupervised probation Jan. 3 for killing a bald eagle in the spring of 2011, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Jeffrey M. Miles, 23, was fined $2,525, lost his hunting privileges for three years and must serve three years of unsupervised probation in connection with the April 4 killing of the mature bald eagle in Franklin Parish, the LDWF said.[…]

Father, son rescued after boat capsizes during duck hunting accident

A father and son were rescued from Duck Lake in St. Martin Parish yesterday morning (Dec. 27) after the pair’s boat capsized during a duck-hunting trip, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Russ Tircuit, 58, and his 25-year-old son Michael Tircuit, both of Addis, were rescued from the water about 8:35 a.m. by St. Mary Sheriff’s Office deputies and transported to the Franklin Foundation Hospital for hypothermia treatment, the LDWF said.[…]

New Iberia man sentenced for killing Louisiana black bear

A New Iberia man’s hunting privileges were stripped and he was sentenced to probation and a $3,000 fine for killing a black bear earlier this year, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported today (Dec. 22).

Federal Judge Patrick J. Hanna sentenced 39-year-old Cory R. Ronsonet to three years of supervised probation, three years of no hunting privileges, a $3,000 fine and 300 hours of community service, the LDWF said.[…]

Ducks flock to Louisiana for second split of hunting season

An estimated 2.42 million ducks had made their way to Louisiana by mid December, which is slightly higher than the most-recent five year average, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has said.

“The estimated 2.42 million ducks on this survey is a 31-percent increase over the 1.84 (million birds) estimated in November, is 11 percent higher than last December’s estimate of 2.17 million (ducks) and is slightly higher than the most-recent five-year average of 2.25 million (birds),” the LDWF report reveals.[…]

It was drizzling when I stepped out of my truck at Sweetwater Marina early Monday (Dec. 5), the first signs of a front that was barreling through the state. I just shook my head, wriggled into my rain suit and headed to meet the two guys I’d be fishing with that morning.

I had told Scott Walker that I didn’t want to waste a day out of the office because I was slammed, and he had promised me it wouldn’t take long to fill our limits of speckled trout.

His confidence was more than braggadocio: I was back at the dock barely more than two hours later, loading up an ice chest full of speckled trout and heading back to the office.[…]
