Youth-only lottery turkey hunt scheduled for Kistatchie National Forest

All five Kisatchie National Forest districts will be open for youth-only turkey lottery hunts on March 16 to provide more opportunities for young hunters, the U.S. Forest Service announced.

There are a limited number of hunting slots available: 20 youth hunters will be selected for four of the five districts, with the Caney District only accepting 15 young hunters, the Forest Service said.

Giant salvinia control program begins on Toledo Bend

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries is set to spray 800 acres of giant salvinia growing on Toledo Bend today, the agency announced.

The effort to control the spread of giant salvinia is concentrated on shallow backwater areas devoid of trees, and will include follow-up herbicide spraying from airboats in tree-filled areas.[…]

Pointe-aux-Chenes WMA water-control structure damaged by Hurricane Isaac, poses navigation danger

A water-control structure at Point-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area was damaged during Hurricane Isaac and is currently a navigation hazard for boats in the area, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries announced yesterday (Nov. 1).

The control structure is the western weir on the WMA’s Montegut marsh management system, the LDWF said.

The water control structure, just south of the town of Montegut on the north side of Wonder Lake in Terrebonne Parish, is the first of two water control structures boaters will observe when traveling east from the Humble Canal. The structure was washed out by storm surge from the hurricane. The public is advised that crossing the breach created by the washout is prohibited and fishing near it is hazardous.[…]
